Uranium Mining Giant GoviEx Uranium Inc. announced that the Government of the Republic of Niger has revoked its rights to the perimeter of the Madaouela mining permit, now declared public domain. This decision, communicated via a letter from the Minister of Mines, deviates from the withdrawal procedure outlined in Niger’s mining code.

GoviEx intends to contest this decision through national and international legal channels. Since initiating operations in Niger in 2007, GoviEx has conducted a comprehensive 650,000-meter drilling campaign, establishing one of the world’s largest known uranium resources. The company has navigated through periods of historically low uranium prices, culminating in the publication of its feasibility study in late 2022. The Madaouela Project was on the brink of development, bolstered by the recent recovery in uranium prices and despite political instability following the coup d’état on July 26, 2023.

In the past year, GoviEx garnered over USD 200 million in expressions of interest for project-related debt finance. The company undertook social and environmental due diligence with a prospective lender, updated its Environmental and Social Impact Assessment, began Front-End Engineering Designs, and initiated ground works, including constructing an access road. In June, GoviEx obtained its radiological certificate, a prerequisite for mining operations.

Uranium Mining Giant Goviex contends Niger government

The company contends that the government’s decision will negatively impact the region’s economic and social development. The Madaouela Project was projected to require an initial capital expenditure of USD 343 million, create up to 800 jobs over its 20-year lifespan, and generate substantial royalty payments and taxes for the government.

Despite this setback, GoviEx continues to advance its international portfolio, including the mine-permitted Muntanga project in Zambia, with a feasibility study expected in the latter half of 2024.
