Montana’s Idaho REE-Th Belt Draws Industry Attention as Demand for Critical Minerals Surges

Integral Metals Corp. has completed the Woods Creek acquisition, expanding its rare earth holdings in southwestern Montana. This acquisition includes 25 lode claims covering 516 acres within the Idaho Rare Earth Elements-Thorium (REE-Th) Belt, a key mineral corridor for critical elements essential to clean energy, defense, and high-tech industries.

As the U.S. seeks to reduce dependence on foreign rare earth supplies, particularly from China, this strategic move positions Integral Metals at the forefront of domestic REE exploration. The Woods Creek Project is located in a mineral-rich region with significant untapped potential, strengthening North America’s push for a resilient rare earth supply chain.

Woods Creek Acquisition Strengthens Integral Metals’ Strategic Position

The Woods Creek acquisition places Integral Metals within a highly prospective section of the Idaho REE-Th Belt, an area known for its rare earth-rich carbonatite systems. The belt encompasses well-mineralized zones, including:

  • Sheep Creek
  • Mineral Hill
  • Diamond Creek
  • Lemhi Pass

These regions have exhibited strong REE mineralization, and Woods Creek shows geological characteristics mirroring those of Sheep Creek, where over 50 REE-bearing carbonatite dikes have been identified.

At Woods Creek, rare earth deposits are believed to be associated with carbonatite dikes intruding complex amphibolite-grade gneiss and schist formations—an ideal geological setting for significant REE discoveries.

Integral Metals CEO Highlights the Significance of Woods Creek Acquisition

Paul Sparkes, CEO of Integral Metals, emphasized the importance of the acquisition in advancing the company’s critical minerals strategy:

“The acquisition of the Woods Creek Project aligns with our commitment to advancing exploration in high-potential critical mineral districts. This project not only diversifies our portfolio but also strengthens our ability to address the global need for critical minerals.”

U.S. Rare Earth Supply Chain: Domestic Development Gains Momentum

The Woods Creek acquisition comes as the U.S. government accelerates efforts to develop a domestic rare earth mining and processing industry. REEs are critical for:

  • Electric Vehicles (EVs)
  • Wind Turbines
  • Semiconductors
  • Military & Defense Applications

Currently, China dominates the global rare earth refining market, creating supply chain vulnerabilities. With geopolitical tensions rising, the Biden administration has prioritized funding for REE projects, aiming to establish a self-sufficient supply chain. Companies like Integral Metals are positioning themselves to capitalize on this shift by exploring geologically favorable and underdeveloped regions like the Idaho REE-Th Belt.

Exploration Plans for Woods Creek Project

Following the Woods Creek acquisition, Integral Metals plans to advance exploration through:

  • Geochemical Sampling – Identifying surface expressions of REE mineralization.
  • Geophysical Surveys – Mapping subsurface structures to locate carbonatite-hosted REE deposits.
  • Petrographic Analysis – Refining the geological model to define drilling targets.

The company reports that the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is currently adjudicating the claims—a standard process for confirming exploration rights. Once finalized, the project will move toward resource estimation and potential drilling.

Woods Creek Acquisition’s Impact on the Rare Earth Market

The Woods Creek acquisition is part of a growing effort to secure domestic rare earth resources. As global demand for neodymium, dysprosium, and other critical REEs rises, securing U.S.-based supply chains is becoming a national priority.

If exploration efforts prove successful, Woods Creek could play a pivotal role in shifting the supply chain away from foreign-controlled sources. Projects like this will be essential for ensuring long-term U.S. supply chain security in the rare earth sector.
