Nokia Bell Labs and Vale Collaborate to
Mining Network

Nokia’s research arm, Nokia Bell Labs, has partnered with Vale, the Brazil-based global mining giant, to implement a cutting-edge cognitive monitoring network aimed at enhancing the performance, reliability, and safety of mining operations. The new agreement builds on the existing collaboration between Nokia and Vale at the Carajás iron-ore mine in Brazil, the largest open-pit iron ore mine in the world.

The advanced technology, currently being tested, focuses on creating a network that can sense, think, and act proactively, enabling mission-critical communication within hazardous mining environments.

Nokia and Vale Partner to Develop a Cognitive Monitoring Network

The partnership seeks to incorporate cognitive services at every level of mining operations, utilizing a comprehensive digital twin to model connected operations at the Carajás mine. This will integrate real-time data from mine production systems, such as autonomous trucks and drillers, with network key performance indicators (KPIs) to ensure seamless operations.

Advanced Connectivity to Improve Mining Safety and Performance

The cognitive monitoring network aims to increase safety, efficiency, and performance by analyzing data from various equipment and systems. The combination of Nokia Bell Labs’ NiX (Nokia Industrial eXperience) research platform and Vale’s mining expertise will enable predictive maintenance and automated intelligence planning, optimizing critical processes within the mine.

Digital Twin Technology to Optimize Mining Operations

The use of digital twin technology will create a virtual replica of Vale’s mining operations, enabling proactive monitoring and optimization of processes. This virtual model allows for more efficient planning and safer mining operations by anticipating potential risks.

Future Mining Operations to Benefit from Cognitive Network Services

This collaboration marks a significant leap forward in the integration of mission-critical network technologies in the mining sector. As cognitive services become embedded in future mining operations, Nokia Bell Labs and Vale aim to revolutionize how networks are designed and managed to deliver operational excellence and value generation.

Nokia and Vale’s partnership will serve as a model for future mission-critical connectivity, driving a new era of digital mining solutions that improve safety and productivity while reducing operational risks.
