During this year’s MINExpo 2024 in Las Vegas, Liebherr and Fortescue made waves with the announcement of a landmark $2.8 billion partnership aimed at delivering zero emission mining solutions. Central to this agreement is the unveiling of the jointly developed autonomous battery-electric T 264 truck. The partnership signifies a historic step forward in both companies’ efforts to decarbonize mining operations, with the deal representing Liebherr’s largest-ever equipment agreement and Fortescue’s single largest contract to date.

Historic Partnership Aims to Revolutionize Mining Equipment

Liebherr and Fortescue have expanded their collaboration to develop and validate a suite of zero-emission mining machines. The agreement will see the supply of 475 new Liebherr machines featuring Fortescue’s groundbreaking green technology for operations in Western Australia. This ambitious undertaking will replace two-thirds of Fortescue’s existing mining fleet with autonomous battery-electric trucks and other zero-emission solutions. Both companies are committed to having a comprehensive zero-emission mining ecosystem operational by 2030, aligning with their decarbonization goals.

Dr. Willi Liebherr, Member of the administrative board of Liebherr-International AG, and Dr. Andrew Forrest, Executive Chairman of Fortescue, unveiled the details of this partnership at the MINExpo, underscoring the magnitude of this deal.
“Partnerships with companies like Liebherr – where ambition is backed by action – are critical,” Dr. Forrest said. “This is an important next step in our 2030 Real Zero target – to eliminate emissions from our Australian iron ore operations by the end of the decade.”

Autonomous Battery-Electric T 264 Truck: A Game-Changer in Mining

The highlight of the deal is the development of the autonomous battery-electric T 264 truck, featuring a battery system designed by Fortescue Zero. Of the 475 machines included in the deal, approximately 360 will be these battery-electric T 264 trucks, tripling the 120 trucks originally announced in 2022. These trucks are equipped with a scalable zero-emission battery power system and an Autonomous Haulage Solution (AHS), both designed to be retrofitted onto existing Liebherr haul trucks, futureproofing Fortescue’s fleet.

The use of autonomous battery-electric trucks represents a critical step toward eliminating diesel-powered heavy equipment from Fortescue’s operations. Fortescue has identified this technology as the optimal pathway for decarbonizing its fleet and achieving its 2030 target for emissions reduction. The T 264 trucks will operate within Fortescue’s mining operations in Western Australia, leading the way for other mining companies to adopt green, zero-emission technologies.

A Pioneering Deal for Decarbonization

The $2.8 billion partnership between Liebherr and Fortescue represents a pivotal moment in mining industry history. Dr. Jörg Lukowski, Executive Vice President, Sales and Marketing at Liebherr-Mining Equipment SAS, emphasized the importance of this record-breaking agreement:
“This deal will not only support our customers along their decarbonization journeys but also help us honor our commitment to offer completely fossil fuel-free hauling, loading, and dozing solutions by the end of the decade.”

The jointly developed technology by Liebherr and Fortescue is expected to be available for mining companies worldwide once it enters series production, offering an opportunity for the global mining sector to embrace large-scale, zero-emission equipment.

The expansion of the partnership between Liebherr and Fortescue, announced at MINExpo 2024, marks a transformative moment in the global mining industry’s move toward sustainability. With the introduction of the autonomous battery-electric T 264 truck and a comprehensive $2.8 billion zero-emission equipment deal, both companies are paving the way for a future where mining operations can operate free of fossil fuels. As the mining world looks to 2030, Liebherr and Fortescue’s commitment to decarbonization sets a new standard for green innovation and leadership.
