Quebec Imposes Tough New Lockdown Measures

The new lockdown is tougher than Quebec’s March 2020 shutdown. It introduces an overnight resident curfew. It also extends non-essential business closures through February 8.

In a statement this week, the 80-member Quebec Mining Association (QMA) welcomed the new travel restrictions. Members felt relieved by the government’s decision. Officials will allow continued mining and exploration operations during this period.

Mining Operations Allowed to Continue

This relief stemmed from the industry’s proactive steps during the first pandemic wave. Mining companies quickly adopted strict site entry controls. They also introduced various other risk reduction measures.

Some operators even set up private laboratories. These facilities allowed them to conduct rapid screening tests directly on-site.

“Our safety results speak for themselves. We can clearly operate our mines safely,” said Josée Méthot, CEO of the QMA.

“The government reached the same conclusion by allowing mining activities to continue. This decision reassures our industry and local economies.”

Securing the Economic Recovery

Méthot added that this move aligns with official promises. The government consistently calls the mining sector a cornerstone of the province’s economic recovery.

The association noted these initiatives preserved the global competitiveness of Quebec’s mining industry. Strong safety protocols kept production lines moving without major interruptions.

Pandemic Statistics and Regional Impact

According to data from Johns Hopkins University, Quebec has reported 220,518 COVID-19 cases. The province has also recorded 8,562 related deaths.

Across Canada, infections have neared 1.9 million. These cases sit alongside roughly 16,600 associated deaths nationwide.

The second wave is intensifying quickly. Daily infection rates continue to hit record highs across multiple provinces.
